Password generator

Create strong random passwords or easy-to-type passphrases on your own device, and see how strong they are.

Your password

How it works

Each character (or word) is picked with a secure random number, with no bias toward any of them. Strength is length × log2(alphabet size) bits: 20 characters from 94 symbols give about 131 bits; 5 words from our list of 517 words give 45 bits plus the extra number and capital letters.

Frequently asked questions

Are these passwords safe?

They are created in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues, a cryptographically secure random generator, and are never sent anywhere or put into the page link.

How long should a password be?

At least 16 random characters, or a passphrase of 5 or more random words. Length adds more strength than symbols do.

What does the strength in bits mean?

How many guesses an attacker would need: every extra bit doubles them. Around 80 bits is strong today; 100 bits and more is very strong.

Should I remember them?

Use a password manager for random passwords and keep a passphrase for the manager itself. Never reuse a password on two sites.
