An estimate for adults, not medical advice.
How it works
The US Navy formulas, with measurements in centimetres:
men: 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456 log10(height)) − 450women: 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 log10(waist + hip − neck) + 0.221 log10(height)) − 450Frequently asked questions
How do I measure?
Use a soft tape, on bare skin, relaxed. Neck: just below the larynx. Waist: men at the navel, women at the narrowest point. Hips (women): at the widest point of the buttocks. Measure twice and use the average.
How accurate is the Navy method?
Within about 3–4 percentage points of lab methods for most people. A DEXA scan is more precise. Use the same method each time to follow your progress.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women by the American Council on Exercise categories; athletes are lower. It is an estimate, not medical advice.
