How it works

Each image is drawn on a canvas, optionally scaled down to the maximum width, and encoded again with your browser’s WebP or JPEG encoder at the chosen quality. Lower quality removes detail the eye barely sees; the size difference is shown for each file.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are read and re-encoded by your browser; nothing leaves your device. You can even use the page offline once it has loaded.

Which quality should I use?

75–85% is usually invisible to the eye for photos and saves a lot. Go lower for thumbnails; for screenshots with text, PNG or WebP at high quality keeps edges sharp.

Why did a PNG get bigger?

PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply, and some PNGs are already well optimised. Convert photos to WebP or JPG instead, which are much smaller for photographs.

Is the photo’s location data kept?

No. Re-encoding drops EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, which is often a privacy plus.
