How it works
ROI = (returned − invested) ÷ invested × 100annualized = (returned ÷ invested)^(1 ÷ years) − 1Worked example
$10,000 grows to $15,000 in 5 years:
- (15,000 − 10,000) ÷ 10,000 = 50%
- 1.5^(1/5) = 1.0845
- about 8.45% a year
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ROI?
It depends on the risk and the time. Broad stock markets have historically returned around 7–10% a year before inflation; a riskier project should promise more. Always compare annualized returns, not totals over different periods.
What is the difference between ROI and annualized ROI?
ROI is the total gain over the whole period. Annualized ROI (also called CAGR) is the steady yearly rate that would give the same result, so a 50% gain over 5 years is about 8.4% a year.
Should costs be included?
Yes. Put fees, taxes and running costs into the amount invested (or subtract them from the amount returned) so the ROI reflects what you really earned.
