Roman numeral

How it works

A number is written from its thousands down, using the largest symbol or subtractive pair that fits each time: M, CM, D, CD, C, XC, L, XL, X, IX, V, IV, I. A Roman numeral is read back and accepted only if writing that number again gives exactly the same letters.

Worked example

  1. 2026 = 2000 + 20 + 6
  2. MM + XX + VI
  3. MMXXVI

Frequently asked questions

What are the Roman numerals?

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. Values are added from left to right, except that a smaller numeral before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900.

Why only up to 3999?

Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M (1000) and do not repeat a symbol more than three times, so MMMCMXCIX (3999) is the largest number they can write.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Romans had no numeral for zero.
