Fraction calculator
Add, subtract, multiply or divide fractions and mixed numbers. The result is simplified and shown as a mixed number and a decimal, with the steps.
How it works
a/b + c/d = (a×d + c×b) ÷ (b×d)a/b × c/d = (a×c) ÷ (b×d)a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/cMixed numbers are first turned into improper fractions (2 3/4 = 11/4); the result is simplified and turned back.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type a mixed number?
Write the whole part, a space and the fraction: “2 3/4”. Negative numbers start with a minus: “-1 1/2”. Whole numbers and decimals (0.75) work too.
How are fractions added?
They are brought to a common denominator first: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator uses the least common multiple of the denominators so the numbers stay small.
How is a fraction simplified?
By dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor: 12/18 ÷ 6/6 = 2/3.
