Tile calculator

Enter the area to tile and the tile size to get the number of tiles and boxes, with joints and waste.

You need

How it works

tiles = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint))

Then the waste percentage is added and the result is rounded up to whole tiles and whole boxes.

Worked example

  1. 4 × 3 m = 12 m²; a 60 × 30 cm tile with 3 mm joints covers 0.1827 m²
  2. 12 ÷ 0.1827 = 65.7 tiles, + 10% = 72.3
  3. 73 tiles = 10 boxes of 8

Frequently asked questions

How much extra should I buy?

10% for a straight layout, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, and a bit more for small rooms with many cuts. Keep a few spare tiles for later repairs: the same batch is hard to find.

Does the joint width matter?

Slightly: each tile covers its size plus one joint. With large tiles the difference is small; with mosaics it adds up.

What about walls with windows?

Subtract their area from the wall, or calculate each wall piece as a separate area and add them.
