Average calculator
Paste a list of numbers, separated by spaces, commas or new lines, to get the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation.
How it works
mean = sum ÷ countThe median is the middle value of the sorted list (the mean of the two middle values when the count is even). The standard deviation is the square root of the average squared distance from the mean.
Worked example
12, 15, 11, 15, 19, 22, 15, 14, 48:
- sum 171, count 9 → mean 19
- sorted: 11 12 14 15 15 15 19 22 48 → median 15
- mode 15; the 48 lifts the mean above the median
Frequently asked questions
Mean or median: which one should I use?
The mean (the usual average) is pulled by extreme values; the median is the middle value and is not. For salaries, house prices or response times, where a few values are huge, the median describes the typical case better.
What is the mode?
The value that appears most often. A list can have several modes, or none when every value appears once.
Sample or population standard deviation?
Use the sample version (dividing by n − 1) when your numbers are a sample of a bigger group, which is the usual case. Use the population version when you have every value of the group.
