How it works
L/100 km = 235.21 ÷ mpg (US)L/100 km = 282.48 ÷ mpg (UK)km/L = 100 ÷ (L/100 km)Frequently asked questions
Why is L/100 km “backwards” compared with mpg?
mpg measures distance per fuel (higher is better); L/100 km measures fuel per distance (lower is better). That is why the conversion is a division, not a multiplication: 235.2 ÷ mpg (US) = L/100 km.
Why are UK and US mpg different?
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon 3.785 litres, so the same car shows about 20% more mpg in the UK.
What is good fuel economy?
For a petrol car, under 6 L/100 km (about 40 US mpg) is good today; hybrids reach 4–5 L/100 km.
