VAT calculator
Add VAT or sales tax to a net price, or take it out of a gross price, at any rate.
How it works
gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)VAT = gross − netWorked example
A gross price of 246 with 23% VAT:
- 246 ÷ 1.23 = 200 net
- 246 − 200 = 46
- VAT is 46, net is 200
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. With 23% VAT, 123 ÷ 1.23 = 100 net, so the VAT is 23. Taking 23% of 123 would be wrong.
What VAT rate should I use?
It depends on the country and the product. Standard rates are, for example, 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, 23% in Poland. Many goods have reduced rates.
Does this work for US sales tax or GST?
Yes. The arithmetic is the same: enter the combined sales tax or GST rate.
