Frequently asked questions

Why does X count some characters as two?

X (Twitter) counts most emoji, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, as two, and every link as 23 characters whatever its length. The X row applies those rules.

Why is an SMS sometimes only 70 characters?

An SMS with only basic Latin characters (GSM-7) holds 160 characters. One emoji or a letter like “ł” switches the whole message to Unicode, which holds 70. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67.

Are these limits current?

They are the limits published by each platform in 2026. Platforms change them from time to time.
