How it works

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Grade points: A+ 4.0, A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0.0.

Worked example

  1. A in a 3-credit course: 4.0 × 3 = 12
  2. B+ in a 4-credit course: 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
  3. (12 + 13.2) ÷ 7 = 3.60

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each grade is turned into points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 …), multiplied by the course’s credits, and the total is divided by the total credits. A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.

Is A+ worth more than 4.0?

At most US colleges no, A+ counts as 4.0. Some schools use 4.3; check your school’s scale.
