Weighted average

How it works

weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ weight

Worked example

  1. 88 × 20 + 76 × 30 + 92 × 50 = 8,640
  2. 20 + 30 + 50 = 100
  3. 8,640 ÷ 100 = 86.4

Where is it used?

Course grades (homework 20%, tests 50%, final 30%), average purchase prices of shares, survey scores, and portfolio returns.
