How it works

hours = end − start − break

If the end is earlier than the start, 24 hours are added. Decimal hours are minutes ÷ 60.

Worked example

  1. 08:30 to 17:15 = 8 h 45 min
  2. minus a 30 minute break = 8 h 15 min
  3. 8.25 decimal hours

Frequently asked questions

What if the shift goes past midnight?

An end time earlier than the start time is read as the next day: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.

What are decimal hours?

Hours written as a decimal for payroll: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours (45 ÷ 60 = 0.75). Multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate to get the pay.
