How it works

Volumes are converted through millilitres (1 US cup = 236.6 ml, 1 tablespoon = 14.79 ml, 1 teaspoon = 4.93 ml). Weights use the typical density of each ingredient in grams per millilitre, for example 0.507 for all-purpose flour, so 1 cup ≈ 120 g.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a cup of flour weigh less than a cup of sugar?

Cups measure volume. Flour is light and airy (about 120 g a cup), granulated sugar is denser (about 200 g). That is why bakers prefer a scale.

Which cup is used?

The US cup (236.6 ml). A metric cup is 250 ml, a UK cup is 284 ml; choose them in the list if your recipe uses them. US and UK tablespoons are 14.8 ml and 15 ml, Australian ones 20 ml.

How exact are the weights?

They are typical values for spooned and levelled ingredients. Packing flour or brown sugar into the cup can add 20% or more.
